| The 'Last of the Full
Grown Men' is back with his first new release
since 1996, and it's a classic slice o'Webb. Webb's always said he's
got one foot in country and one in rock & roll, and to these ears
that foot in country has dug in a little deeper this time around. Songs
like Old Copper Penny, If You're Looking for a Fool and Scattergun
really show country roots. Rock and roll is well represented throughout
too, with Little Boy Sad, I Just Had to Laugh and Mary Lou exposing a
rock solid foundation. 'Jimmy Reed' is a smoldering take featuring a
powerhouse vocal performance, and inspired me to learn more about Jimmy
Reed. Battle of the Bands has a great horn bit throughout, and really
rocks. Only One and Little Boy Sad are a nice one-two punch
before the disc goes out quietly with an instrumental reprise of
Scattergun. It's been nine long years, but About Time is definitely worth the wait. |
