For
2006, as part of the refresh of the PT Cruiser's interior the 'tray'
between the front seats was swapped out for a 'triple decker' storage
console:
To the left is the top level; a sliding armrest that takes the place of
the original seat mounted folding armrests. It clicks into place
at the front and rear of its range of travel. Below is the 'triple
decker' partially open, showing the two "lids". Pull on the ribbed
lever in front to release.

To the left is the
'top' storage box, just under the sliding armrest.
There's a pen slot and room for gloves or other odds and ends. On the
right is the bottom layer, a deep compartment with space for CDs, and
a power outlet.
Finally, here's a shot of the back of the console. Notice that the
window switches are mounted much higher than they were initially.
In addition, there are now two cupholders for
the rear passengers rather than one. The new console provides a lot of
utility, though perhaps some of the materials and the level of finish
could've been higher. Note particularly the flashing on the above right
photo.
